The Moment

Viewers’ Choice, runner-up

Here, a learner is caught at the crest of clarity while manipulating a set of scaled pattern blocks engineered to offer a variety of mathematical possibilities. The blocks shown here belong to a set of classroom materials I’ve designed for teachers and learners to explore how mathematical concepts—like shape, space, and scale—might emerge through free play. Learners test the potential engineered into the tiles through their size, geometric properties, and colour as they respond to the prompt: “What can you make with these shapes?” As is often the case with youngsters, the impact of this particular research is clearly written all over this child’s face as his free play suddenly becomes distinctly mathematical.
