Toxicology and Environmental Health
Housed at the largest academic toxicology research and training centre in Canada, researchers focus on emerging human and environmental issues in toxicology, or “ecotoxicology.” This is a main research focus, encompassing a broad range of topics and disciplines. Examples include heavy metal toxicology and effects of toxins on hormone systems and immune function. Toxins from human activities such as mining and agriculture are examined, as are endemic toxins such as those from cyanobacteria.
Many researchers investigate the impact of contaminants on wildlife and aquatic systems and ultimately, questions of impact on human health.
Researchers work with a wide variety of collaborators and funding partners from government, academia, and industry. Extensive expertise is available using advanced analytical tools such as mass spectroscopy and various synchrotron techniques at the Canadian Light Source on campus.
